Nagisa Nagase (長瀬 渚 Nagase Nagisa) is the girlfriend of Ryuji Danma. Their love story is well developed in Shonan Junai Gumi (GTO's prequel).
DOB: April 7
Despite this, she has a very limited appearance in GTO. In Shonan Junai Gumi she is a major character and her character and personality are also better shown.
Background[]
Nagisa came from a well-off family and attended the private Shonan Fujisawa Girls' Institute.
Before meeting Ryuji, Nagisa was abused and raped by Junya Akutsu, which broke her mentally and led to her creating a split personality called Yasha, who loved Akutsu and was just as violent as him. After Akutsu went to prison for the attempted murder of Toshiki Kamishima, it seemed Yasha had gone away, but she started showing signs of resurfacing, especially when Nagisa heard motorcycle engines revving. As Yasha, she had a hannya tattoo on her shoulder.
GTO: The Early Years (Shonan Junai Gumi)[]
Ryuji Danma first met Nagisa when she was working as a waitress at the Dolphin Cafe. After taking his order, she left, and then Ryuji heard a scream. Running towards the sound, he found two thugs beaten bloody, and a mysterious woman (Yasha) riding away from the scene on a motorcycle with a Midnight Angels sticker on it.
Ryuji started falling in love with her, meanwhile Eikichi was concerned about a mysterious female delinquent who was beating people up all over town. Eventually, Eikichi discovered her secret and rushed to find Ryuji, who Yasha was trying to kill.
Ryuji took Nagisa to stay with him at his sister's apartment, and both she and Eikichi were amazed that the two of them hadn't "done it" despite sharing a bed for several nights. The two of them, Eikichi, and Shinomi Fujisaki went to the beach, where Eikichi tried to figure out what the trigger for Yasha was (figuring out it was the sound of a motorcycle engine at the end).
When Akutsu was released from prison, Yasha reawakened and joined him in rebuilding Midnight Angel. He tried to finish Kamishima off for good this time, and Ryuji as well, but Nagisa appeared as a vision to her evil self, stopping Yasha from stabbing Ryuji, and jumping in front of him when Akutsu tried to stab him. After rushing her to the hospital, Ryuji handcuffed himself to her bed and refused to leave her side until she was okay.

Differences[]
Anime[]
- Nagisa has an unique appearance at the start, showing Eikichi Onizuka trying to hit on her, like with any other girl, with an obvious negative feedback.
Manga[]
- When Eikichi Onizuka is extremely angry and doesn't want to teach in class, he just puts on a VHS which shows to students Nagisa explaining them the lesson.
Etymology[]
- The name Nagisa means "beach, shore" (渚).
- Nagisa's surname Nagase means "long" (長) (naga) and "swift current, rapids" (瀬) (se).
