The GTO manga was very popular when it was released at first which induced the producer to create an animated series.
The first anime was taken care of by Studio Pierrot while Noriyuki Abe as well as Naoyasu Hanyu directed it. Although the anime was made to very closely follow the manga until volume 14, several scenes were modified in order to clear out the underage screening problem which involved: violence, nudity and perversion. Eventually the anime ran past the arc that the manga was following resulting in a totally different ending.
Due to the anime being rushed several characters were not fully developed and some did not even make an appearance while others were radically modified, only the anime main characters resemble their counterparts in the manga.
In Japan, the anime was aired by Fuji Television as well as Animax, the entire series composed of 43 episodes spanned from June 30, 1999 until its final screening on September 24, 2000. Each episode was called a lesson, the titles below are the ones that Tokyopop created when it screened the English dubbed version of the anime.
